WHAT IS EBEI_
The East Bay Economic Initiative (EBEI) is a partnership of
government and private organizations as well as businesses dedicated to
promoting economic development and creating jobs for the marine
industry of Rhode Island.
HISTORY
EBEI was formed in 1993 out of the repeal of the Sales and Use Tax
on boats. Within two years, employment in the industry rose 40%,
while the state’s total employment only rose a percentage of

LEADERSHIP
The East Bay region, with its valuable natural resources, skilled
work force and world-renown name in the marine industry, will
continue to surge forth as a leader, working for the people and
businesses of Rhode Island. EBEI sets an example of how government
and private businesses can work together to achieve common goals.
FOCUS
EBEI works to provide Rhode Islanders with good, local jobs and
the necessary skills for the marine industry, acts as an
information resource for businesses and continues to promote the
industry both nationally and internationally. EBEI Special
Projects include:
NATIONAL &
INTERNATIONAL MARKETING
EBEI has an extensive international marketing campaign designed to
promote the world-renowned boatbuilding and boating tourism in
Rhode Island. The objective is to attract foreign boat buyers to
Rhode Island in order to purchase a boat and take advantage of the
tourism in the
state.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
EBEI works successfully with employers and several local and state
agencies to create training programs for entry-level positions and
up-grade training programs for current employees.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The marine industry is also promoted within the state. EBEI has
several on-going projects with the area schools to talk and
demonstrate the many opportunities in the marine industry in RI.
The idea is to encourage students to stay in the state to work or
to go to school. Students are taken on tours of local facilities
and guest speakers are invited into the classrooms. Internships
and shadowing are also coordinated.
EBEI AS A RESOURCE
EBEI serves as a resource for information on new developments
locally, national and internationally in the marine industry. By
keeping the industry apprised of new technology, regulations and
related events, RI will keep its competitive edge in the world
economy.
